I’m writing this about my friend super vocalist, Darlene Koldenhoven. After I spent years on the road, I finally landed a 3 yr. steady showroom gig at Resorts casino in my hometown of Atlantic City, NJ. The showroom went to taped music. (Within 2 yrs., every casino showroom followed suit and went to tapes in their showrooms, and most lounges closed in town also, and became slot parlors.) So it was time to finally expand musically. My fiancé and I moved to LA. in '87. I knew no one! Had no gig waiting for me either. (This was during the spandex/hairband days on the strip.) So we get there, and I put an ad in Music Connection Magazine. I got millions of calls from poser bands. (LA was brutal to make ends meet the 1st year.) But then, I happened to get my 1st private gig with some great session players. Luckily that was the gig that I met Darlene Koldenhoven. She was an established session vocalist, and a sweet girl. We hit it off, and she liked my playing! So on a break I asked Darlene, "Do you know any contractors, or drummers that might need a sub? Because I’m new in town...” So Darlene immediately gave me numbers for many contractors and busy established drummers that always need subs. I thanked her for her kindness. I called them all and said, Darlene Koldenhoven gave me your number, if you ever need a sub, I'd be happy to be one of your sub drummers! Do you know, they all called and used me through the years. If it wasn’t for my friend the lovely & talented Darlene, I wouldn’t have been able to pay my bills. Thanks to her, I was able to stay in LA. After a while, I started getting good recording sessions. Not only TV and Film soundtracks, but with lots of songwriters and artists. And I owe it all to Darlene for her kindness and willingness to share with someone she just played with! That’s why I love Darlene Koldenhoven. She's the greatest, and I'll never forget her for that!
