Angel on Ivories
Classical Voice with Piano

Darlene Koldenhoven

Angel on Ivories by GRAMMY Award Winner Darlene Koldenhoven, assoluta soprano, is a timeless collection of 17 of Darlene’s favorite classical ‘songs’ from 1546-1958 performed throughout her career since age sixteen; recorded January 2011. Darlene produced her fifth album in recital format, accompanying herself on piano, allowing the aesthetics of the musical architecture of these classical masterpieces to shine through. Singing in English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, and Portuguese, Darlene chose to spotlight a variety of classical Art Songs, German Lieder, Early Italian, Late Renaissance, Twentieth Century, with a scattering of best-loved arias from Oratorio and Light Opera along with a lush 6-part a cappella vocal arrangement of the Irish Folksong "Tis the Last Rose of Summer" arranged by Darlene. Composers include Mozart, Faure, Haydn, Jobim, Rodrigo, R. Strauss, Liszt, Rorem, Caccini, Orff, Gershwin, Hageman, Gluck, Garcia, Loewe. Rarely does one find such a beautifully balanced combination of vocalist and pianist in one artist as expressed in this album. Delicate peace to stunning bravura!

"What an amazing program...I'm not sure I've ever heard anyone's record with so much music...and challenging material to boot. It's like a primer for concert singers' encore chops.  Fantastic! You are truly amazing."

Dave Grusin, Grammy & Oscar Winning Composer, Pianist

"I have so much respect and admiration for Darlene that it’s almost ridiculous. Listening to her is like getting a check in the mail that you think is made out for $10,000 only to realize that it really says $100,000. Angel on the Ivories is Darlene exposing the souls of a number of beautiful tunes, written by some very famous composers, unimpeded by the operatic technique that very often prevents the singer from getting at the soul of the music and because of that, she can actually put you in a trance."

Ira Newborn, Filmcomposer - Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Naked Gun 33 1/3, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective; Guitarist/Musical Director for Manhatten Transfer; Professor of Filmcomposing NYU
